Title: Close Encounter of the Furred Kind
Post by: DenBee on June 08, 2008, 21:20:27
Just been potting on some surplus tomato plants in the garden, prior to giving them away, and was standing at the waist-high garden wall which I use as a potting bench, when a disturbance caught my eye in the border about 2 feet from me. 'Twas a mouse, which was probably as startled to see me as I was to see it.  I did say "hello" to it, but it scarpered off across the steps.  Probably heading for the shed.

I'm not too thrilled about it going to nest in there, because that's where we have the tent, and other squishy stuff (roll up mattress, etc).  So I'm going to buy a trap - sorry mousey.

What I want to know is if it was a house mouse or one of its outdoor cousins.  How does one tell the difference?

And it's amazing how much less of a scaredy cat I am these days.  I didn't really turn a hair at having a mouse scampering past me.  And the other day I spotted a spider sitting on my shoulder, and simply swept it off.  Possibly the same spider which has been clambering up the wall behind my bed at night before I go to sleep.  It's probably all this gardening lark, which definitely gets you used to live things jumping out at you all the time.  ;D

Can't help you on the mouse id. but like you have definitely been less squeamish of late, though still not majorly impressed with spiders! ::)

Just wait 'til you've had a baby rat run up your wellie boots  ;D

I'm not squeamish at all about things like that but I do draw the line at poisonous snakes and miniature poodles.

I am okay with most spiders except the one that's looking back at you from inside the overflow pipe in the bath.

AAAAAAAAAAWWWWW! Spiders are our friends  ;D They eat flies, that eat sh*t & lay maggots, which sometimes live in my fridge  ::)

But I draw the line at tarantulas that look like 8-legged miniature poodles.

VILE! OFF WITH THEIR LEGS!!

I'm not particularly afraid of spiders, but I remember an encounter I had with one biggie garden spider that had found its way into the house...the swine reared up and had a go at me when I tried to pick it up! Enough to put me off touching it....I resorted to the glass and bit of paper method to put it outside.... :-[

Cannot understand why I get the ab dabs when a spider is in the house and yet
could not care less at them in the garden. dug up a family of mice last year!
just put the spade in and suddenly mice were running in all directions
not scared of mice I often say hello to one in the compost bin
