Post by: actiongran on June 07, 2008, 17:21:06
Hi i was just wondering if anyone has done Eden  and Lost gardens of Heligan as its only 6weeks til my lovely birthday trip.
do I need a day at each?
ive only got Eden booked so far as you can go any day on the e-ticket and I am going to River Cottage (Axminster, 2hours drive from St Austell)for the other part of my present! Thanks

We found half a day enough, what we did was one in the morning and a good nursery in the afternoon plus a cream tea!
I really liked the Duchy of Cornwall nursery at Lostwithal, just brilliant also there is a good one in Bodmin. To eat Sam's in Fowey.
Have good trip and if you are coming back through south Devon The South Devon Chilli Farm is worth a visit.

yes we thought a full day at Eden was more than enough, but very very good.

PS the sign they've put up "Do not eat the chillis" is there for a reason   :o

Went to both Eden and Heligan last year. Eden was very crowded although very interesting, but my heart lies with Heligan...what a place :o. I would go to Eden on one day and Heligan on another, and do other stuff if you have time. Not nice to be organised if you are really enjoying yourself ;D

AAaaaahhhhh.......... Heligan ....  :) ;D :) ;D ... what a place, it really is something special. I was lent the book on heligan by a friend about a month before we went and I think reading the history and layout etc. before hand really helped.

Eden too is fab (The VERY talented Mr. Smit again) and I agree with others about dedicating one day to one and one day to the other with a nursery visit after if time allows.

We did that a few years ago - Eden one day, Heligan the next and then on the third day we went to Lanhydroc (I think I've spelt that wrong) All very impressive and all near each other. Lanhydroc is a NT house which is just fantastic - it's frozen in time since WW1 when the number one son failed to come home by Christmas in fact failed to come home at all and the family kept everything as it was. It's a big house plus a garden, a very good day out, don't miss it if you're down that way.

We loved going round the Eden project but from a personal point of view I was more interested in how they got that bloody big lump of granite in to the place :)

Ooh yes, Lanhyroc. A must see. Also, if you're in Launceston, go and eat at the Springer Spaniel...we stayed nearby and worked our way through the menu ;D

You should also try Rick Stein's fish and chips in Padstow - fantastic  ;D

If you're going to Eden, make sure you visit the camera obscura.  Most people miss it and we only found it by accident when the people in front of us suddenly disappeared yet we could hear voices.  It's up high, right round on the left from the entrance and wasn't even on our map but it might be now as that was about 3 years ago.  It's cool, and dark and you can watch the clouds and planes go over by looking at a circular dish on the floor - fascinating.

Have a great time.

Eden is very impressive, but less so the more times you visit I think. I'm always a bit disappointed in their plant shop, not much exotic or different in there....expecting high standards!  The kids love the 'canteen' (not cheap), wooden utensils and take home cups.

Heligan....love walking around it, especially in the lower tiers of the 'jungle'....hardly anyone around and a bit spooky! Their restaurant did the best cheese and onion pasties we found in all Cornwall (and I tried quite a few!)The aforementioned farm shop....fab, we stocked up there as we were staying in a barn conversion s/c and cooked some fab meals with their food!

GOSH big thanks to all for your replies, A4A comes up trumps again. I really appreciate all the suggestions and as its such a long drive from Norwich, will try and cram in as much as possible. cheers.

Just returned form a wonderful week in Cornwall and was at the Eden project just two days ago.

I have to say we loved it. We were there for six hours and only left as it was closing time but could have quite easily stayed for another hour or two.
I thought it was a wonderful day out and I have to say, it was very quiet indeed ,there were hardly many people there at all, in fact I mentioned it to hubby wondering if the price had kept people away which would be such a shame, but obviously not reading some of the comments on this page.

We also had a lovely meal at the med bar I think it was called and I thought it was excellent value for money. The food is freshly picked on site and so tasty and beautiful. A perfect day all around and well recommended!

Wonderful! Just wonderful!  ;D

Make sure you allow time to spend a whole day there as there is so much to see.
