Title: Strawberry leaves attacked
Post by: Need a Leek on June 03, 2008, 17:50:48
I noticed today that some our Strawberries have been attacked by some kind of wee beastie. I checked the leaves for any visible signs of bugs and saw nothing, It's strange as the whole structure and shape on some of the leaves are still there but transparent. It is not my entire crop yet so any advice would be great for some early intervention.

Cheers
Tony

Some caterpillars only attack the underside of leaves leaving a ghost leaf as it were.  :-\

Would they be visible though? as I had a good scout about and I never saw any caterpillars " apart from the ones on my feet lol"...The leaf still had a clear looking membrane in it if you know what I mean " not been chomped", almost like someone has rubbed out the green colour ???.

Cheers

Definitely sounds like some sort of caterpillar damage to me. Find them and pick them off or spray with a product which will control them, but they don't normally cause a lot of damage. I might be wrong, but suspect that if you have caterpillars on cabbage they might have the odd go at strawb leaves.

The reason these caterpillars don't eat the clear membrane on the top of the leaf is that it's tougher than the succulent green underside and stringy veins.

Thanks, I guess I am going on a Caterpillar hunt tomorrow...Could the little blighters be hiding amongst the straw?...As I said on my original post I could not see any visible beasties :).
