Title: Growing in pots - photo update
Post by: Georgie on May 23, 2008, 16:16:46
I thought I'd share a few pics of some of the edibles I am growing in pots this year.  These were taken in the last few days.  G x

Dwarf Broad Bean The Sutton - germination has been poor.

Three varieites of Cucumber.  I will be planting 3 plants in a half barrel this weekend and will keep the spares back 'just in case'.

This is Par-cel.  Looks like Parsley and tastes like celery.  I love it.

Pineapple Physallis.  These plants will be potted on this weekend.  If you look closely you can see that they are already in flower.

Tomato Micro.  Already well in fruit and I hope to be picking some ripe ones shortly.

Tomato Tiny Tim.  These have been outside for over a week now.

Autumn fruiting Raspberries which are shooting up.

And finally one of the Strawberry plants just showing some colour.

I don't believe it!! Your plants are so much more forward than any of mine. I think I am going to move back down South (I wish) . Was thrilled yesterday when I found
2 0f my cucumbers are about 6" long.
Thanks for sharing Georgie although I do feel a bit  :'( :'( when I see your pics.

Georgie I have to admit I bought plants this year (only 2). Last year I grew from seed and although I was sure I had removed all male flowers the cues were still slightly bitter.. The 2 female plants I have this year came from our nearby nurseries (Delfland). Have taken pics :)

Wow, Im in Kent yet your plants are well in advance of mine. They look really great.
I fancy trying some Parcel, looks fabulous. Have you grown the Pineapple Physallis before? If so what are they like? I was reading about them & really liked the sound of them.

Thanks CM.   :)

I can send you some Par-cel seeds if you PM me your details.  As for the Physallis, yes, I grew them last year and saved the seed.  They seemed to ripen better than other sorts I've tried.

All looking really great G  ;D.

I was just wondering about the raspberries in pots. As you know, I grow all my veg in pots but I haven't tried any fruit. I really fancy trying raspberries but didn't think that they would thrive in pots. How long have you had them in pots for and do you find that you get plenty of fruit off them?

Thanks Jo.

This will be their third year.  The pots are 12" ones and I top dress them, feed with slow release organic fertilizer and mulch heavily each year.  They fruit quite well but I wouldn't describe it as 'plenty'.  One can never have enough Raspberries IMHO.   ;D

Thanks for that G.

I think I might give them a go then. I presume one cane per 12" pot? How many do you have?

Jo.

Yes, one cane per pot.  I allow up to four suckers (is that the right word?) in each pot and I have two pots.

Never heard of Parcel. Does it get thicker stalks like celery?

I'm growing more flowers in pots since they bloom much earlier. Also salad crops in pots since they stay cleaner and are easier to pick and no weeding. And can be moved into shade out of the heat which prolongs harvest. The only downside is the frequent watering.

Hi Annie.  The Par-cel gets stalks but they are much thinner than ordinary celery.  I'm sorry but I have no seed left to spare now but I've found this link if anyone else wants to try it:

Hi Kev.  Yeah it's wonderful here today, just in from sunbathing.   ;D   8)

wow, your physallis are much larger than mine, georgie, and they took ages to grow
does the par-cel go stringy, like some celery, I have difficulty growing celery, maybe this is the solution?  :)

Hi Manics.  I've not tried eating the stalks raw so I'm sorry I can't say if it's stringy.  But it does have a very strong celery flavour so it's good in soups, stews etc and the leaves are nice in salads or used as a garnish (as you would Parsley).  In the first year there were very few stalks, just leaves really, but this year there are more.  I have no idea if it's a bienniel or a perennial but time will tell.   ;D

Eek.  Then you'll be able to spill the beans about what it really looks like and no-one will ever speak to me again.   ;)   ;D

BTW, did you spot that Enfield residents get free entry to Capel Manor on 7 June?  I might pop along.
