Title: Avocados?
Post by: dtw on May 22, 2008, 23:32:09
I planted an avocado stone and put it in my airing cupboard and forgot about it until this morning.
It had germinated and produced a long thin white stalk with purple spots on.
I have now put it in my kitchen window.

Will it recover from weeks of darkness?

I'm sure it will, it has plenty of stores to draw on from that stone.
;D

It has started recovering, there are two tiny growths on the sides.
They are white and look like shoots, but it's are start.  :D

It'll be flowering by the end of next week.  ;D

I always bung them in the planter I have in our conservatory but they hate the heat in there and whither and die at this time of year - I pulled up 4 today and binned them.  Next time I will start them in pots and bung them outside until the winter.  The produce lovely plants with thick dark green leaves.

It was the 'in thing' at one time to plant an avocado's stone. The top bit off a pineapple was planted too, it was about the same time people swore they could make rum with a marrow and brown sugar.

I never knew any one who had any success with any of these so I am impressed with your seedling.

I wonder where they got pineapple and banana seeds from to grow the first ones?

i have an avocado plant that must be at least 4 feet high, it survived the winter outside only to have its leaves ripped off in high winds but they are rapidly re growing now  ;D

A pineapple will crop from a cut off top-not that I have ever tried. An avocado will give a nice house plant but don`t expect it to give fruit-unless you have the equivalent of Kew Gardens :)

apparantly an avocado tree needs to be 50 feet (i think thats what it is) before it will fruit but they are a very attractive addition to the garden

Actually they'll fruit pretty heavily at considerably smaller than that - you don't see them planted too often here in BVI but over in St. vincent I saw a number of quite heavily laden ones that can't have been more than 20 feet or so (there is one in the excellent St. Vincent BG if anyone is passing). If one had a really decent greenhouse in the uk and was willing to lose the space to the experiment I'd have thought you'd just about get one to fruiting size in a greenhouse border but whether they'd flower in those conditions who knows  ;D.

Avocado update, it now has a few leaves and gained a few inches.
It's 11 inches tall now, I think it was about 5-6 inches before.

your avo looks great - sadly It takes about 10 years to friut. I come from a sub-tropical part of South Africa where every second house had an avo tree. They are really a sub tropical plant and take ages to establish. If you planted it in a greenhouse (with a high roof) you could top it to try restrict its growth. they grow into huge trees so bear this in mind. the only places that I know of that grows avo trees is the eden project.

I have grown several over the years and they just got taller.

Last year I cut the top off a two year old plant that was 4 feet tall and it is branching nicely despite being left out all Winter.

It also depends on what type of Avo you have. If it is a large smooth skinned sweet avo - its going to be a BIG tree. If it is a small wrinkled skin 'hass' avo, the trees are much smaller.

allaboutliverpool - im amazed that your survived the winter. Do you have it in a pot and if so what size. Ive always wanted to grow some tropical fruits over here but they take so long to mature and are hard work to keep alive!!
