Title: Hibiscus
Post by: Sinbad7 on May 22, 2008, 20:54:05
Are these hard to grow?

A friend gave me one and I planted it on the plot but it hasn't done a thing, it looks the same as when I planted it.

Any suggestions to get it to shoot?

is it alive? scratch a bit of bark away from the stem if its green it will grow when its warm enough, if its brown its probably deceased ;)

Another plot holder said they thought it was still alive, a bit of the root was green.

It is called a Newbiscus.

I moved one and the thumbnail test showed it to be green under the bark. Three years later it had not done a thing. I dug it up and burnt it and although it looked like green wood it crackled away like old twigs.

I have three in the garden, and they grow happily in rubbish soil in the dappled shade of a monster bamboo and they have to suffer having a honeysuckle growing through them.  They have only been in leaf now for about 3 weeks, I always think they have kicked the bucket as they are so late in coming into leaf, so don't give up just yet.
