Title: Raspberry & Gooseberry, will they grow?
Post by: floraldi on May 18, 2008, 16:39:03
Today in Wilkinson's I noticed they had reduced these by 75%. They had been £2.  My husband was moaning like mad   (what is it with these fellas that complain about things that just don't matter??) because I bought one of each. He said we have no room.  Therefore fello gardeners, are they likely to grow?   I have soaked both in water after undoing some of the plastic that was wrapped around the roots/soil.

Mine always have. Do they have any shoots on them? If they do I am pretty certain they will be fine.

Unless it is an Autumn type the rasps won't fruit this year... and the gooseberry won't have set any... but next year... they are virtually indestructible.......  ;D

I planted 2 gooseberry bushes in November that I was given.  They seem healthy enough but what time of year will they produce fruit.....

I also put in 8 raspberry canes in late Feb.  They have green leaves on now.  What month do they fruit?

Gooseberries have already set fruit - they're swelling and ripening now.  You'll get a crop next year.

It depends whether you've got summer or autumn fruiting rasps.  If the canes are growing quite sturdy and self-supporting, they're probably autumn fruiting.  If they're a bit straggly, they're probably summer fruiting.

Thanks to all. I'll have a go and look forward to fruit next year. I did have an idea that they were pretty tough as my son's first house had a little patch of ground at the back (across the entry) and it was full of raspberry canes which were full of fruit but they had not been tended for years..

And, Loopyloulou, I hope you manage to get some stuff reduced. I did ask about seeds but was told that sale is not until about Sept.

Don't worry Floraldi - just keep watching the Bargains Galore board, believe me, you'll know when Wilkos seed sale starts!
