Can anyone tell me the best way to grow celery?
I don't usually grow it but a friend has bought me some plants, so want them to do really, really well.

Rich soil and plenty of water is what celery likes. I grow self-blanching types in a shallow trench with lots of old manure in, and earth them up as they grow like potatoes. They usually get a bit of leaf miner, but I just pull off any affected leaves and eat the rest! ;D
I have grown some seedlings for the first time myself Sinbad, they look very healthy in the pots but I must admit I'm apprehensive about planting them out. I will plant mine next week...so keep in touch ;D
On the label it says to plant the crown on the top of the soil, where I think I would have put them in a trench, so thought I'd better get your expert advice on this.
Good luck Emaggie with yours, we'd better both watch out for the leaf miner :)
Thanks for the advice Deb, will give them plenty of water, not sure that I have any rich soil as the plot is nearly full up now. I thought I'd plant them in a grid.

Loads of muck and more water... ;D
So, can I do the muck bit when I plant them Saddad?
Sinbad
Unless the herbivore has just dropped it yes... ;D
I'm about to try celery too. Got my plot March 07 and the complete patch was under 3' of couch grass so this is my 1st full year after hand 'de-rooting'. I've got celeriac growing in the green house too anyone grown that .. any tips?
our celeriac's in the ground, well rotted muck and water, we grew some brilliant stuff a couple of years ago, last year, tried celery, no luck so back to celeriac this year :)
I had a good crop last year, first year of converting my couch field into a plot...grew it in shallow trenches in one of my raised beds following on from overwintered onions.....it seemed quite happy!

Hope mine looks as happy Deb, plan on planting mine tomorrow.
Great photo.

For stephen, go to http://www.growyourown.info/page98.html for details of growing celeriac, one of my favourite vegetables.
Very impressed by DebP's smart photo, what a messy person I am by comparison ::)
Planted in a shallow trench with a good helping of horse doings and slug pellets all around. Hoping for wonderful things Sinbad, you too?
So, I planted it and put some manure on the ground first, I didn't do a trench, and watered it well, today I found some well rotted manure that I had forgotten about so put more manure on and watered again ;D How often am I meant to be doing this for? Once a week? Once a month? Or have I done this enough now with the manure? Lots of water, is that every couple of days?
The label didn't say if it was self blanching, so how will I know?
Good luck with your's Emaggie, has it grown any yet LOL?
Sinbad
Ooooh YES Sinbad, they are ENORMOUS already even ;D ;D ;D
(wot a liar, they just look the same as yesterday)
Don't know how often we should feed them though, where's that Deb P when you need her ;D?
Have you taken their photo Emaggie? ;D
Bunged my celery in yesterday, shallow trenches which I flood with water (about a canful each) about every four days unless it rains well. Feeding? I do my initial watering in after planting out with some liquid seaweed, and again every month. If they are nice and green , that's all they get...if they start to yellow slightly they get a handfull of chicken manure pellets down each trench! ;D
