Hi everyone, Im growing from seed a tumbling variety of cherry tomatoes that the packet says is suitable for hanging baskets. I have actually only put 2 plants into basket & they are really tiny still & seem to be failing to grow yet the plants I potted on into bog standard plastic pots are thriving...anyone else experienced this?
Is there a way to help the hanging basket toms along?
I have taken them down for now & they are back in my plastic greenhouse to protect them from the winds & heavy rain we have been having in Kent.
Thanks
Bringing them into a bit of shelter until they get bigger will help. When it is windy it can be too cold for tumbling toms... it is quite exposed in a basket!
;D
what size pots are the others in. Could it be the ones in the basket are trying to make roots to fill the basket?
Janet.
I had a tumbler in a basket and one in a pot last year. The one in the basket was useless...........I thought I might have been that it was too shallow because the other one was in a deep pot and fine......or that i'd potted it on too early ???
Thanks everyone for you rreplies. The basket is supposedly holding the same amount of compost as the pots. Will keep the basket inside my plastic greenhouse for now & see if it perks up. If its still lagging behind loads in a couple of weeks I will transplant it to a pot & give up on the idea of hanging basket toms!

Same here. All mine, cherry and standard, are in the greenhouse in large pots. Think I did try the basket method once but it was not a success and yet my pal at the Over 60s always grows his like that. Must be big baskets I think.
Rhubarb Thrasher ha! ha! baskets of death... :D really made me laugh. Yes this describes my experience with hanging baskets to date perfectly
