Thinking ahead here,
Do the wilko, cheapo places sell hessian sacks come maincrop harvesting time?
I don't think so, but the market always has loads of paper ones being thrown away... the hessian ones cost a fortune on ebay when I looked 2 years ago - didn't need them last year >:( blight!
I haven't seen any in there. I got mine from Marshalls. They were a bit more expensive than I had hoped but then they do look nice. I am going to hang them out in the fresh air for a bit cos they really smell of jute
Just a suggestion but I am going to give it a try.
A friend had old coal sacks. Hessian ones... going to wash them in washing machine and hope they good enough lol.

I'll wager you a pound that you never get rid of the smell... but good luck!
We get ours from a pet shop usually £1.
I use old open weave plastic sacks that I find washed up on the beach every year. They need to be stored in the dark of course.
I would think twice about washing coal sacks in my washing machine .
Unless you didnt want to use it again?

Doesn't everybody still use paper potato sacks from the fish and chip shop? They are usually pleased to give them away.
ha ha brilliant - also an excuse to go to the chippy!
I've stopped using sacks as you don't get as much air around the potatoes. Now I use a stack of blue mesh veg trays ( any caterer throws them in the skip ) and just cover them to exclude light. My pots do alright in the shed till February.
In sacks it's harder to spot any rot setting in.
I've got 6 large plastic stacking crates that Tesco delivered our online shopping in - the guy delivering them obviously couldn't be bothered to empty them so said just stack them outside or something and ask the next delivery guy to take them back.. yeah, right - the were in my allotment shed the next day!
;D

May sound daft question.
ROUGHLY what sort yield do you get from potatoes and how long would you say they last in a hessian sack ?. This is my first year of growing veg so a bit unsure.
Thanks in advance.
