Title: Hosta Lady on gardeners world
Post by: springbok on May 15, 2008, 07:54:53
Has anyone tried the garlic mixture she swears by keeps snails and slugs off her plants??

Thought it was an interesting concept, just wondered if anyone has tried, and if it worked.
Title: Garlic Wash deterrent that works on slugs snails and other pests!

Una Dunnett's Garlic Wash recipe

Crush 2 bulbs of garlic.
Steam or boil in 2 pints of water for 3 to 4 minutes until blanched.
Strain mixture and make back up to 2 pints.
Leave to cool.
When ready to use mix one tablespoon into a gallon (3.8 litres) of water
Sprinkle on to leaves in late afternoon (in dry weather)

The mixture will apparently dry on the leaves making them rather unappealing to slugs and snails!

Apparently works on another nasties too and all veg can be sprayed with it and it does NOT leave a residue of garlic taste on veg.

I am going to give it a try!

So am I. That was the only worthwhile thing in an excruciatingly boring programme. If it works, though, it'll make the boredom worthwhile.
