Title: east facing plot - any good? (I'm new to this)
Post by: socrates on May 13, 2008, 19:13:20
Evening all, and I welcome your advice. I had a quick look back to see if this was asked before. Anyway, I'm going to TRY a veg plot. The only space is about 3mX3M quite sheltered and is facing East, but gets sun until about 2-3pm depending on the time of year.
Will that be OK do you think?
I have done a bit of work on the rotating etc. But am clueless about times of planting and so on.
However, if you could answer about the site of my plot ( for now!!) I would be very thankful.

I agree with Dialeg, just ensure that what ever you plant, the taller things, like beans, sweetcorn, don't cast shadow on the rest of the plot, if you get my drift.

Only really a problem early in the season when direct sunlight causes frozen tissue to melt rapidly..

Well its also a problem when you have to provide heat for longer under glass because its a long evening and night.
Let's not go happy clappy on this one. East facing is less than ideal :)

Gazfoz,
Thanks for being so honest! and thanks to all other replies too.

Now, bear with me please, if I used a plot on the West facing side (which I could at a push) it is overhung with a large plum tree, which I do not want to get rid of.
The roots of this would make digging a bit difficult I suspect, but I think given what you have said, I will try a small patch there and see how it goes. Otherwise back to the drawing board!
As to what to grow, well, the usual, beans, peas, carrots, lettuce, spring onions and then the winter veg when that comes around.

Cheers. Hope I wasn't asking dumb questions, but it's great to get the advice of seasoned growers! And if preparation of the ground works out......I'll be back!
socrates.

Rather than try and dig through the plum trees roots couldn' t you establish a raised bed?  If going round the plum tree you'd have to box round its trunk rather than let the raised soil bury it.
