wow cant believe how quickly the seasons started!
quick question about me spuds! (i'm still new to all this) how high should my first early plants be before i earth them up? i've had different advise but none of them match! thought i might get a diffinetive answer on here! also does anyone know whats the best veriety of patatoes for a great big jacked spud type crop? like the ones that were around in the shops when i was young... not the feable excuse for spuds available now lol
thanks a million!
Steve
Ha - the chances of getting a definitive answer here... you know the old, "ask 2 gardeners a question, you'll get 3 different answers"...
I bury mine as soon as they start showing, because that way I can mound great bug lumps of clay on without worrying about damaging the haulms. Some leave at least a few inches showing after earthing up, others pile it up from the start... Truth is, lots of people do it different ways & get similar results, so it probably doesn't make a huge difference either way. Just nobody likes to admit it!
I think, to get big spuds, you need to rub off some of the eyes off them, the more there are on the seed, the more, maybe smaller, potatoes you get :)
p.s, we earth up when they're about 6" tall ;D
I think I've been lucky as I just heap on the soil when they around the height that manicscousers said. I wouldn't worry too much about the conflicting answers.
Some people say not to chit your main crop. ;D
Cheers for the advise guys! :0) think i'll just wack em in and cover them when they start to show, adds to the drama of digging them up! wondering if that next one will be a massive "Ted Baker"
