Title: Weather watching and advice.
Post by: springbok on May 12, 2008, 21:49:26
My last frosts for my region is generally mid may according to most websites.

I have checked metcheck, and have found that my area's temps are not even going to get that low.

I have emptied my greenhouse with all the plants and veggies waiting to go in, even my tomato's and chilli's have been out day and night with the heat.  Nothing seems to have been effected, they just growing a lot.

I guess I have "hardened off", not sure if thats the right way.

I was wondering,as many folk are holding off for a week or too to plant out, if its safe to do so now?

I have had to plant out some climbing Borlotti beans as I started them much to early and they are looking very sad.

I think till the end of May watch night time temps like a hawk and be ready with the fleece :)

Today I'm putting in my runner bean plants and when my Sweetcorn plants arrive I will be putting them in after a couple of days frost or no frost :)

Will tomatoes & courgettes that have been outside day & night for a week be ok under fleece when the weather gets cooler at the end of this week?
Or should I bring the chillies & peppers back inside at night & put toms & courgettes in plastic greenhouse?
Sorry if this seems like a really silly question but as a complete novice I dont know if bringing plants back inside then means I have to restart the hardening off process once weather improves  ???

As long as it doesn't go below about 5 degrees at night you should be ok. I've got everything out now except melons and tomatoes, and have taken off fleece. I'm not seeing any nighttime temperatures below five or six in my area (Cambridge) for the next couple of weeks so I'm risking it. If there's a late frost at that stage I'll call it an act of God.
