Is it true that you shouldnt plant tomato's and potato's near each other?
Something to do with blight.
That is true.
I'm sure I've read that on a post on here somewhere or at least somewhere out in cyberspace!
looks like I'm going to be doing some moving! >:(
Last year my potatoes suffered terribly with blight.
My greenhouse full of tomatoes was literally a metre away with the door facing the potatoes......I had the best crop of tomatoes I ever had!
The gent in the next plot got potatoe blight and tomato blight too.Hid greenhouse was a horrible mess.
I suppose you could say I was very lucky.
Same with us - it's the shelter that makes the difference.
We have planted the tomatoes in the ground and have made a sort of greenhouse around a frame with visqeen. If they did get blight, could they still contaminate the potatoes. I dont know how it spreads?
in the books it says to plant the toms & pots in the same rotation, ie, together. but never follow each other the following year. i have never grown them together, i have never had blight, i just must be lucky
If you get blight on one, it'll spread to the other. Everything depends on the weather then; infection only spreads in wet weather.
Thanks for that. I wasnt sure if the tomatoes were covered, we would be ok. I dont really want to have to dig them up and move them. Dont know what to do now!!!
I do what littlegem said, plant the nightshades together as a rotation. Last year the toms were destroyed by blight, peppers some minor damage, potatoes absolutely fine. Go figure!
