Can I split hostas now or is there a definite time to do it?
Thanks

Best done when dormant... if you did them now they would sulk!
;D
If you need to do it now, do it. All these things are best dome when the plant is dormant, but I've taken all sorts of liberties with them, and they've been OK. The only thing I've ever really known to harm them was the drought two years ago, which really hammered a lot of mine.
I have always split my Hostas in the spring just as the shoots begin to show. Never been any problem and the plants always recover to fill the pot.
I do mine when I can just see the new shoots. But then I pot them and give them a couple of weeks under shaded glass to let them recover before placing in the garden.
I have been having trouble with mine in the ground, for the last few years its being stripped no matter what I did from gravel to copper rings, you name it i did it, so just as the first shoots appeared a few weeks back, I dug two thirds of it up and potted it.
Fabuolus, the bit that I left in the ground has been completely stripped and so far the potted on portion is blooming, well done me ;D
Thanks for replies. They're just beginning to shoot so I'll give it a go.
