Title: How many runner bean plants per cane?
Post by: nuthatch on May 07, 2008, 16:53:27
I have erected my canes for my runner beans in the normal way and have put two seeds to each cane. Do I wait until they show and pull out the weakest or let them all grow if they germinate?

I would go for three seeds per cane if your using that method which would leave you 2 plants per cane. But i would however start in trays some alternatives as if a pesky mouse comes along you will lose more than just one or two plants.

How long is a piece of string? My annual bleat.

Two to a cane? How spaced are the canes?

Once again, the book says at least 9" between plants.

Or do you like knitting??

As a result of earlier discussions I've planted some 2 per cane at 9" and some one per cane at 6" and will see how they turn out.

One runner bean per cane.

But grow quite close. Don't suffocate the things, they need space above ground more than below.

You will NOT increase the yield by putting two or three together.

Honestly. In fact, you may well get much less.

I'll be growing one per cane, have around 15 canes lined up against my fence.

Just what Tim says 9" apart.  I like being orginised so got this ready end of April.  Not planted them out yet, though may have too soon, they are getting large in their cold frame.

image time!
