Title: Tell me about cabbages
Post by: jo9919 on May 07, 2008, 16:47:31
Having recently aquired two rabbits as pets for my kids, I am being eaten out of house and home! I have a small area in my front garden (yes, I know you don't usually grow veg in your front garden, but this is the only space I have), so I wondered if I could grow some cabbages there.

Firstly, am I too late to plant cabbages now? If not, can you please recommend some varieties. Do I start them off in modules or sow straight into the ground? How do I prepare the bed? Should I add compost, lime etc. Will they need netting? How long before harvesting?

As you can see, I know nothing about cabbages so any help would be greatfully received.

Thanks,
Jo.

You're not too late to plant them at all. I'll be putting Autumn Giant in shortly.

You can always buy in plants?

If there are a lot of pigeons you will need netting, although they are usually worst in winter when other food is few and far between... As the rabbits aren't fussy eaters try some Kale as well to have "greens" to pull in winter..

Try getting in touch with a local green grocer. They often have surplus and will supply cheaply.

Things like cauliflowers have a lot of wasted green leaves. Rabbits love these.

Too much cabbage gives the bunnies an upset stomach. Hay is their main food.  :)

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I have bought a packet of Greyhound Cabbages and these have now been planted. Still looking for any other tips regarding preparing the bed.

I know that rabbits main food is hay, and they always have a plentiful supply of this, but I do also like to offer some veg too  :)

That's all I've heard from my dad since we got the bunnies, "They'd do well in the pot"  :o

Oh, and the snails love them after a drop of rain, so treat for them too.
