Collected my ex battery chickens on Sunday and they are really gorgeous!!
The lady from Battery Hen Welfard Trust said that I may just get some on Sunday - as I had pleaded with her otherwise I was going to have to wait until end May!!!
I don't "do" waiting!!!
She told me that I may not get my 12 but that I may have 10 or so - but that they were coming from a farm where the farmer cares for his birds (even though they are battery hens) and where he doesn't let them get "oven ready". Well when I collected my "girls" they were all fantastic - and I got my 12 too! Bloody brilliant they are.
Got them home in the evening (to the lottie) unloaded boxes - straight away they started scratching etc. They needed help up to the house as everything was new to them but following morning I helped them down again - a couple tried themselves but they landed with a plop as they obviously had no practice!
Anyway - yesterday I had 10 eggs - YES 10!! They all are really friendly - not scared or anything - I fed them worms and they played around in their run and a few had dustbaths - how lovely is that! I put them to bed about 7'ish and still had to life them up!
Today, I opened their pop hole and door - went for a walk with my dogs and when I came back they were all out "being busy" a couple were in the house and there were 2 eggs so far (by 8.30) and some more on the way. Yesterdays were laid in the grass, all over the place but todays were in the house!!!
How brilliant is that!
I think you probably can tell that I am pleased with them!

Congratulation old bird... Pleased they are settling in ok.
Really do miss my poultry as I used to had a huge number of birds when I lived at my parents including Light Sussex, Dutch Bantams, White Crested Black Polish and some rescued ISA browns that used to cost 12p each from the auction.
Sadly now I live in a rented house so poultry is a no go, and wouldn't want to risk them down on our allotment three sheds were burnt down last year :(
yay!!! really pleased for you OB ;D I'd love chickens one day. looking forward to photos of your new girls!

Hi all - Thanks for all the good wishes! Names and pictures (when my son returns my camera and I get the hang of putting them on here) will follow!!
Unfortunately the only one with a name "Gingerbread" is not well! She has hurt a leg and is "down" I will ask advice on a new thread on this one as I don't know what to do! All the others are fine and are getting along very well.
