Title: is it too late to plant parsnips?
Post by: pakaba on May 04, 2008, 22:12:21
As always my parsnips have not come up :(
Is it too late now to sow some more.   I noticed that other plots have them coming up lovely.

I would go ahead and try, make sure you keep them well watered. You will get a later smaller crop but its better than none.  ;)

White Gem can be sown up to June, they have a shorter than normal cropping time 175 days.

Information can be found here

but I would get them for 50p from here

It is not too late to plant them.

I will keep sowing them for another month, a few at a time. One to a loo roll tube.

The moment the green shows they get put into the soil, loo roll tube and all (the cardboard rots down like fibre pots).

You can even put them in the flower bed in odd areas, the foliage is quite attractive along with asters.

only sown mine on Saturday and will consider sowing again if they fail but give them time as they can take ages to show signs of life

I sowed 3 rows 3weeks ago and they haven't come up yet. They do take quite a while to germinate. I sowed some in tubes last year but I made the mistake of using compost which was too rich for them and they all grew into wierd monsters with about ten legs. If I do it again this year I will use sieved loam and see what happens.

Maybe you should plant them earlier. It sounds as though the roots could have reached the bottoms of the tubes and been damaged.
