Title: potting on tomatoes.
Post by: grannyjanny on May 01, 2008, 08:24:13
What is the best size pot to pot on tomatoes. I have some trays with 24 sections or some 3- 4" square pots. Also is it to late to plant more seeds.

A 4" pot is ideal.Square is good because they pack close together & keep bottom moisture on the bench.

If you have a bit of warmth for germination - propagator? - there is no reason why you should not sow now.  You'll just have a shorter season. I would have thought that the smaller fruited varieties would do best.

... or cuttings from your existing plants, if they're an okay size might be worth a thought - unless you were thinking of different varieties, of course!

Nice thought, Ollie, but doubt that you'd get cuttings from a seedling?

You know, I'm half asleep here, what with the newborn etc... I've let mine a bit late, so they would be big enough (a good 6 inches high, still in trays)...  most shouldn't. Good point Tim. Ignore me.

the side shoots make great cuttings, and are genetically the same age as the parent plant, lower flowers and fruit, suited for outdoor cultivation.

Thanks. I will get them done at the weekend. I did buy a Sunbaby which I am going to take cuttings from.
