Does anybody know where I can buy some cheap / free plastic tubing to make supports for mini polytunnel / cloche type thingys to put nets over and stop the beasties eating my seedlings.
Ta.
I beloive you can use old hosepipe? Try freecycle.
50M 25mm water pipe 20 odd quid at Screwfix.
Bloomin heck alba 20 odd quid, thats my budget for the year LOL
try a electrical wholesale place ask for hip2 20 pvc tube 3mtr
around about 1.20 + vat per 3mtr
We used a cheap hosepipe, with bits of cane stuck in the ends ! Works a treat !
i have allways manage to find most things other people didn't want or find usefull at our local salvage yard you be surprised at what you find give em a call you never know // or try a trans co worker they have lovely yellow pipe had my eye on down the road make lovely poly tunnel with that
Maybe we should have a competition to see who can spend the least on their allotment over a year! I HATE spending money on anything except seed & compost!
You can get a reel of hosepipe from poundland. I can't remember how long it is though.
Janet.
Try the water boards skips
I love skips me.
We got some blue piping offcuts free from a builder who had just finished building some new houses near us. About 3/4inch thick
Free stuff is good stuff!!
I tried hose piping last year with canes inserted at the ends and shoved in the ground but found the middles drooped when the sun made them hot ........ and they stayed that way. What do you do to keep them "hoop" shaped?
twinkletoes
have a try on your local building sites you never know whats going free have scaffholding planks ply boards and about 60 fence posts about 8 foot each and i was asked to call back in a few weeks by the site manager ;D so dont be shy go and say hello to your local site managers
We've seen a goodly number of plots with that cheapo curtain rail holding up cloches. 50p a meter from CarpetRight.
Just bend each end into the ground and put the poly on top.
The poundland hose is 10m long- was in there this morning.
MDPE (Water Pipe) is very expensive. I have asked my bro who is a big wig in one of the water companies and he is going to ask a supplier if they have any right-off rolls that they can let me have. I would suggest you ask around building sites for any off cuts and see what you can do with that.

That is expensive if you can't afford it. I have calculated I need 100m. I can't afford it. Therefore it is expensive for me, just like it is for the originator of this thread. I
need a Coleman 442 stove. I can get them for about £35 on e-bay - proper price about £70. I can't afford it and am going without. If you can afford it, it's cheap. Some of us can't! I also have holes in the shoes I am currently wearing.
Clanger,
What do you need 100M for ? Cloches?
is the 442 for a brew up?
Do you think kids hoola hoops cut in half would work?

442 for:
brew up at the plot
brew up when out hiking/wild camping
brew up when on Scout Camp (Assistant Scout Leader)
And yes, the tuning is for 8-10 5.5m net cloches for brassicas and less for winter plastic cloches.

Maybe I could nick all the hoops from the PE shed at school ;D
For years I used unleaded army stoves (made by Coleman) which I bought for about a fiver each second hand from our local Government Surplus. I've now changed to a Primus Omnifuel I got free with a tent from Terra Nova. No idea if the old ones are still in the garage.

Can't help on the stove, I was going to suggest making a rocket if it was to be static.
If you have the net already, could you not use a post and rail of rope and timber to make a sort of net tent as a stop gap?
