Title: Netting
Post by: busy_lizzie on July 24, 2004, 00:14:21
Do you know what I hate?   Netting!!  It is so fiddly.  There must be a better way to protect your crops than having to drape netting over bamboo canes with actmel containers over.  It takes ages to do, and then you have to get under it again to weed.  I always trip over it and it is difficult to secure.

Saw EJ's Wire netting over a frame - is that the way to go?  It does work because saw a mass of pidgeon feathers on the netting covering my cabbages, but it is such a chore.  :) busy_lizzie

I loath netting BL.  Fortunately Ava was able to recycle some wire gridding and fencing from a security fencing company - it was no use to them so they were happy for him to liberate it, plus I have come across mesh in skips and have asked around.  It works, but it isn't cut to size, can be too big, too heavy and with some of it, if it isn't properly supported, it can crush your crops!  :'(  I am also now using net curtains as these I have been able to acquire by the sack full.  Easier to attach to bamboos than netting.

Join the club. Hate netting, weeding - anything that's not of one's own volition. But 2 questions:
1. Why on supports? Are they tall enough for you to walk under? If not, why not fleece or mesh laid straight over? Person either end of row & peel back to weed. No other person - OK, a bit longer! And crops grow better under.

2. Storage? Roll up the mesh into a bag? And then sit on it to flatten.

I trip over my own feet - let alone nets! = Tim

PS Pegs? The new black barbed pegs are a menace - they destroy the mesh.
