Title: Brassicas in your compost
Post by: miniroots on April 30, 2008, 07:07:06
Hello all,

I have just dug out all my Brussel Sprouts from last year - they went completely mental and I've ended up with a lot of plant material to dispose of.

Can it all go on the compost heap?? I'm club root free, but will I still encourage diseases to develop?  Or should I just compost the main plants and dispose of the roots separately?

??

Hi

I am growing them for the first time this year so am no expert, but have been told they are fine in the compost, but it is worth cutting them up or bashing them about a bit to help them break down.

Hopefully someone will come along and confirm it is ok to compost them! :)

I hope mine are as good as yours...

As long as its desease free compost everything :-)
The stems of things like sprouts and cabbages are very thick and woody and can take a while to break down but they will get there in the end. Bashing or chopping up with a spade will help.
