Title: Pieris. Help needed please.
Post by: lorna on April 28, 2008, 10:55:35
I have 2 Pieris plants. The colour looks good but they have got very leggy and the leaves , especially on the first one are turning yellow. Can I do anything with them? Can I take cuttings if so when? I do like them but they are not looking attractive.
Many thanks.

I love pieris, we lost one to waterlogging a couple of years ago, I now have a dwarf one which I mulch with left-over teabags and water with cold tea, my mum always told me, if you want somthing to stay green, water it with tea..seems to be working at the moment
sorry, lorna, never taken cuttings  :)

Have you tried an ericacious feed Lorna? Or maybe it got hit by the cold on new leaves.

Its a lovely size, it might be worth trying something to save it first. Good luck. ;)

Yes I'd give them a good mulch of ericacious compost or peat as they prefer acid soil. I don't know about cuttings, but you can propagate them by layering.  :)

Thanks Star and Simon. They haven't had a eracacious feed this year (ran out) will get some more tomorrow and give them a good feed. Will also try my hand at layering, never done that before :) We always get very strong winds here, I did wonder if the very cold winds we got earlier have caused the problem.

Hi Lorna.  According to the Shoot site Pieris like a sheltered position.  And it says you can take softwood cuttings anytime between now and August.

Georgie, due to the very strong winds it is a bit difficult to get a very sheltered spot in my garden, I could transfer them to the gap between the greenhouse and back of the garage, only downside of that is they will not be as visible as they are now. Still that would be better than losing them. In the meantime I will try taking cuttings
that way I can have back up plants, Thank you.

Mary. The eracaious is being picked up by Ayson as we speak. will give them a good feed later today, fingers crossed. Thanks for your help. I really like them so hope I can improve them.
