We're not tight really, just trying to get going with our allotment on a budget, any ideas where you would be able to get plastic barrels to use as water butts or to grow carrotts etc in as we have run out of ground space on our little allotment !!
Why water buts, have you got the riddled soil and sand to fill them. You can grow carrots in anything with depth, household buckets, baths, tubs etc
Guess they are trying to get above 24" to avoid the dreaded carrot fly?
Ask about on your Site Sandra... if somebody has one ask where they got it from... we get a stock from a local company Quadral***....
;D
Its a pity you dont live closer......I can get loads of the things....free!
Have you any jam manufacturer's in the area? Mine had rhubarb pulp in them before I turned them into water butts. Try some other food manufacturer's that might use large quantities of fruit pulp. Mine cost £4-00 each. You can get them on ebay but the delivery charge can be quite high.
Try your local online Freecycle group, it is amazing what some folk wish to give away! ;D
I have given about 30 away on Freecycle over the past year.
Thanks for that I have put a 'wanted' on there today, hopefully someone will have one. Thanks for your help
Our local scrap store or resource exchange gets them from people who store carpet shampoo - you could try your local one (have to pay a joining fee and then per trolley of stuff - ours often has other garden stuff so might be worth a look) or try a company that uses that kind of stuff. Apparently this shampoo is completely non-toxic, so after a scrub the barrels are safe to use in the garden!
where would I find such a place ? I have never heard of that kind of thing, only the council tip and they won't let you have anything !
One of our council tips does but they're going to be closed soon very annoying. It's silly really because it could be reused instead of going to landfill.
Our local tesco has got big 42 litre tubs on sale at the moment. They are flexi plastic and have two handles. They are also half price at £3.33. I have bought 10, 1 has 5 inches of rainwater in it already and I only got them yesterday.
