Apart from the usual deadheading and watering, what other gardening things can be done at this time of year?
Apart from the mentioned tasks i have run out of things to do in the garden but want to be gardening, not just looking at it!
So come on folks think, what else can we do in out gardens in Summer?
Now there's a problem I'd like to have :D
Weed! BBQ, mow the lawn, weed, clip the hedge, weed, turn the compost, keep the lettuce &c. coming, weed, sort out the autumn/winter veg, weed, clip the hedge, mow the lawn.......................
Jeremy
Weed, pick peas, weed, dig potatoes, weed, check/pick fruit bushes, cut out fruited rasp canes and trim, weed, thinning out swedes beetroot and lettuce then make new sowings of lettuce, beetroot etc, watering/feeding, constantly checking toms and picking, weeding - ooh Richard list is endless at this time of year and that's just the veggies/fruit not the flowers. then when you get home you have to blanche, freeze, pickle and jam! :o
Of course in betrween all that you must have deep meaningful conversations with other lottie people about merits of various varieties and new merthods used and results obtained - best part of the day! ;) ;D
Mow lawn, edge lawn, weed lawn, weed garden, trim hedges, dead head, water pots, plant more lovely things into pots, water and feed greenhouse (plants not the actual house you understand), sort out fruit bushes, hack things back that are taking over, repot perennials and shrubs grown from seed and are getting tooooo big for their boots, maintenance on shed, greenhouse, patio, deck and fences, feed fish (grand job that one, and count the frogs whilst feeding fish. Counted 8 in residence yesterday!), move childrens toys from main garden into their garden, repeat several times during the course of the day, water garden.....it goes on and on and in between all of that, I have the allotment to tend, and of course, the kids are now in the throws of 6 weeks summer holidays, so entertain them, cook, clean, do regular chores etc. Boring enough for you. To be honest, summer gardening is much the same as winter, spring or autumn, it never ends, the priorities change, that is all.
So EJ what do you do after 10.00 am then ;D ;D ;D ;D.
Peter
bask in hammock with a book and a glass of red-the weeds will be there next year ;D
Stephan
I like your line of thought cleo, I'll drink to that, cheers, Roy ;)
It's weeding ad nauseum for me too. Swearing at them just doesn't work so they have to get ripped out - again and again and ........
Oh, there's fiddling with the tomatoes too.
Like EJ, my domestic responsibilities prevent me from doing all the gardening that I'd like to.
If I wasn't moving plastic toys around the place etc, I'd like to start on some cuttings from fruit bushes that are on empty plots on the allotment. (As I have heard that summer cutting can sometimes be sucsessful.)
Also I have a huge plan for a flower garden at the allotment and could really do with getting started on preparing the land.
Then there's the weeding, and the weeding, and the weeding. And i should probably be doing some feeding and some more feeding. And our compost heap could do with some serious attention. And there's a pile of old corrogated iron and broken windows at one end of the plot that really needs dealing with - etc etc etc.
Sarah.
Apoloigies for the content of my previous post. I sounded bored - i was bored at the time. Still am a little, but a bit of Cyber gardening (a la A4All) does wonders fro morale.
There is though only so much you can do at this time of year. All the things i WANT to do cant be done in the summer (like planting and replanting borders). Perhaps I should content myself with routine maintainance jobs, making plans and admiring what i have.
