Title: Planting peas
Post by: star10 on April 26, 2008, 09:40:50
Hi

I have some pea plants and am going to put them in my raised bed.

I have never done this before and was wondering if they are okay trailing along the ground or do they need to be tied up to supports??

What is the best way to protect from birds etc??

I also have some shallot bulbs that I want to plant out, but some of them have got shoots growing from them, are they still okay to plant?

Advice appreciated please - as you can prob tell I am very new to this !!  :)

Use supports. Netting strung between bamboo poles is good, the height will depend on the expected height of the peas.

The shallots will be fine, I always get mine started before planting them out  in the garden...

I have very limited space and i grow some of my peas unsupported but they are in a pot on top of the kids Wendy house I have to pinch out the tips when they reach the floor as they rot if I don't but i grow  runner beans on the other side and they seem to grow OK on the ground if it is not to wet

they all roted last year   :'(

great for getting the kids to eat more veg as they just open the windows and pick them to eat ;D i usually don't get any :'( as they are all gone before they get to a decent picking size

Isn't it great when kids get involved in gardening. I've got a little girl, who is really into helping me with sowing seeds, watering etc.

It's nice that they know how veg/fruit is grown and doesn't just come from Sainsburys!!!  :)

That's a good idea growing them in pots, think I might have a go at that too.
