Title: peppers/chillies

What are the best conditions to grow peppers and chillies?

Chillies:

What we do is germinate them in a heated propagator, pot them into 3.5" pots, and eventually either 6"/7" pots.  Keep them in an unheated greenhouse, and pick the fruits.

Once germinated (they do take quite a while c. 21 days) pot them up, and they are quite easy to keep.

Peppers

We have not had much luck with.  We have grown the plants, but the fruits have been very thin walled and small.

Give them plenty of heat (I put them on top of the hot water tank) and they should be up a lot faster than that.

I found that with peppers too.  I would have thought they would be easier to grow than the chilis.  But my pepers always have thin walls.

Any tips on improving this?  more tomato feed?

Maybe more water too?

I'm growing Jumbo Pepper F1 this year.

I only had 6 seeds in my packet though (a different brand).
Only 2 plants have survived so far.  :(

Chillies and peppers love warmth. I grow mine in an unheated greenhouse on gravel filled trays, which keep holds the heat a bit and keep them snug.

I had good results with 'Jumbo' peppers last year too, they were bright red by August in my little lottie greenhouse. The 'Lipstick' ones were more difficult to germinate, but just about ripened in the end. Do you think the thin walled peppers could be down to the variety? Which ones were they?

I think the 'thin wall' will be most likely down to the variety what you want is the type advertised as 'blocky' fruits.

I think this also covers the second part of your statement.

I don't use a lot of feed, I prepare the beds with Fish blood and bone initially, then when the fruit sets I feed them tomato feed about once a week (if I remember) ::)

I've never thought of using fb&b in the soil for chillies - sound like a good tip to me. Thanks TG  :)
