Title: Not a happy bunny today!
Post by: gonz on April 23, 2008, 13:30:39
We went up to the allotment last night to do some work in the lovely evening sunshine to find a fox had
ripped my poly tunnel to shreds and some little bas***** have had a vandalising spree.

I dont mind the fox so much, they dont know any better,  but I do mind some mindless thugs smashing
things up for the sake of it.  They broke into my neighbours shed, stole his tools (he is a pensioner!) and used them to break into my shed and my other two neighbours.  As if that wasnt enough, they then decided to have a fire in my new water butt so know I have to get another one.

I suppose it keeps them off the streets!!!    I wish I was as intellegent as they are!  >:(

Very true.

I have only had my allotment since Feb this year and we have put loads of hard work into getting it ready and have loved every minute of it.  Its the first time I have been there and not felt totally relaxed.
I suppose it happens to everyone at some point.

I think it does, part of the game really. I don't lock my shed (it's barely worthy of the name) and it's never been vandalised (or if it has I haven't noticed!) but many on our plot have had damage or theft at some point. I sort of have accepted that it's not a garden and some of my stuff goes to slugs, some to the wind (compost bin did a Mary Poppins a couple of weeks ago) and at some point some will go to vandals.

All the same a horrible thing to have happened and I feel for you.

My allotment site, a large meadow, was decorated with a big old tent the other day, full of boys yelling their heads off and laughing, with 2 small fires going. I envied them their fun and thought it must be just for 1/2 term, but as I was talking to the council anyway, about taking on a second plot there, I did ask about it. Apparently boys or parents actually asked for permission to put up a tent, and an unauthorised person in the council office had agreed to it, though the man I was talking to said it was a wrong decision.

I said I was no spoilsport, and thought the allotments could survive a few children enjoying themselves at the unused end over 1/2 term, but on the other hand, putting up tents was going a bit far - was the meadow increasingly becoming a public open space for campers and dog walkers etc? He denied it strongly, but the tent was still there the following Monday.

Today, not only has it gone, but there is a sign propped up reading POLICE AWARE. I am surprised - someone else must have reported it more vigorously than I did, and the police have actually been there.

We've only had minor vandalism on our site, but I've always been aware of the possibility. Perhaps this will put a stop to it?

Very sorry about gonz's experience.

How do you know it was a fox that vandalised your polytunnel - could it not be the vandals themselves.  I cannot imagine a fox doing such a thing unless there was something inside that it wanted?

Sounds a real shame and to have a fire in your water butt - what idiots!

I really feel sorry for you and dread anything like that happening on our sites.  I am sure that we are well overdue something awful happening.

Chin up Gonz

Hello

We have seen fox prints on top of the poly tunnel before it was ripped and when we looked closely, you can see it has been shredded with sharp claws and not just ripped.

Maybe the fox was bored as well as the local kids!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Its about time kids were brought under control.  They have no respect for anything or anybody.

I set up booby traps every time I leave my plot, i.e as I shut my shed door I prop a large tool against it, you must remember to catch it if it has not been tampered with!!!!!! or Whack in the face ;D

I'm now looking for man traps at the car booty, things you do for good quality food :)

I know what you mean!

I wanted to wire the shed up to the nearest lamp post, but I was told its unethical. Spoil sports  ;D

So sorry to hear you have been vandalized  .
On the site I have my allotment, we can't have a shed for that reason, we have a large sea container, and you can lock all your allotment stuff in it .
but I dont use it I take all my allotment tools home with me.
its a bind I know .

Sorry to hear you got vandalised. It's so frustrating.

Interestingly on our site we now have a plot that is maintained by the local youth offending team as part of their community service. They are trying to teach them some useful skills and educate them about gardening.

I don't know if it is coincidence but we've not had any vandalism at the site since they started. Fingers crossed it continues

Had another break in at the allotment over the weekend.  2nd time in 2 weeks.
Again, nothing taken just mindless damage.

So frustrating.

I am so sorry to hear that you are having such an awful time with vandals. It is so upsetting...I have had water bombs & rocks thrown at me while Im working on my plot & it has made me consider giving up a few times (Ive only had my plot a couple of months too). One of the old boys on our site got hit in the head with a rock & was knocked unconscious so the Police are having to take it more seriously now but apart from patrolling the road nearby for a couple of days nothing much seems to be happening. The council have put up really high, sharp & sturdy fences & gates so vandals cant easily get in but unfortunatelt this just seems to have made them become violent towards plot holders instead.
