Title: robin's nest in the greenhouse
Post by: calendula on April 20, 2008, 17:26:46
Imagine my surprise and delight when i found not only a robin's nest in the greenhouse but there are 3/4 chicks as well - not a problem at the moment but the nest in under a pot that is resting on a very large tub that I use for pattypans and courgettes and I will need this ready for next month

I know that robins breed several times throughout the season but my question is will the female use the same nest or is she likely to move on and build another - I really need that tub but do not want to mess with nature

any answers  :)

She'll make another. Wait till the chicks fledge, and take it.

Many thanks Robert - are you sure taking it isn't being cruel, I know that will force her into  making another but would feel bad about that if not natural - I was hoping they naturally move house as the old one would be a bit dirty but .....  :)

Can you move the nest a short distance?  I had to move a birdhouse once that had residents because it wasn't snake-proof. The bird kept flying back to the original site in confusion but eventually found the relocated house with the snake guard in place and all was fine.

will think about that option GA, thanks - at the moment I am toying with the idea of just moving the pot that is resting on the tub (it is a pomegranate and it needs to go outside anyway) and that will stop the nest from being secretive and hiding so she might want to go elsewhere next

I guess I'll decide when they've fledged

someone described my greenhouse as being like a zoo as I have so much wildlife living in it - I should charge for viewing  ;D
