Post by: debster on April 17, 2008, 19:47:52
another of my daft questions, i planted onion and shallot sets, onions are obvious, grown them before but shallots do they come up looking like a few seperate plants all clumped together (does that make sense?  ???)

Mine are just appearing (in clumps). The onions are up already but looking a wee bit sad. Would seaweed dressing be the thing do you think to bring them on?

Slightly of topic. Accidentally stepped on to some of my sets(i started them in the g/house in trays of compost) planted them 3/4wks ago growing well ,tops 6/8inch high will they recover/straighten up and onions continue to grow OK.  :-\

Onions just get bigger

Shallots divide into 5 or 6

Welsh onions divide up and get to be a clump live big chives.

Those that were stood on could be damaged and might decay as they grow.  (A bit like an open wound getting infected) Keep and eye on them and if they look like they are splitting or seem sickly lift them. Any disease may spread to the decent ones.

A few weeks ago in the wind, a very large sheet of plywood blew across my onions chopping quite a few heads off, they've all recovered and are shooting again so you should be OK.

A healthy plant will soon recover from being stepped on, so don't worry.
