Hi
My BF has room for a windowbox at his place and I thought it would be a great idea to try and grow some salad leaves and herbs (might get him interested enough to come down to the lottie with me then ::)). What I'm wondering is what kind of compost should we use? And will we need to feed as well as water the plants once they get going, and if yes, what kind of feed (organic if poss please)?
Would also welcome any suggestions of things that would do well.

hiya, sweet-pea, we grow salad leaves in a polystyrene fish box, you can buy mixed leaves, spicy mix, etc, normal potting compost, we don't feed and do cut and come again so they give 4 to 6 cuts..enjoy ;D
we also do chinese leaves and red mustard
I use John Innes No 3 nice and sandy and doesn't dry out too quick and a diluted seaweed feed after the first six weeks, what about tomatoes the very small plants the ones for baskets . with chives ,basil when warmer should smell good too, the trick would be to be productive in winter.

Watercress and salad leaves!
I have 2 windowboxes Sweet Pea. Last year I grew Tumbler Toms in one and carrots in the other. I used ordinary multi purpose compost. Everything did very well, carrots were picked small, very tasty ;)
This year I removed half the compost and added well rotted manure, now my strawberries are in both of them. Out of the way of slugs too :D
Coriander, if he likes thai food.
what about baby carrots, spring onions and basil :)
good idea, cambourne, small round carrots, radish, maybe land cress for winter :)
This is great :D Especially like the idea of strawberries as haven't got any down at the lottie.

If you get strawberries it might be an idea to get one of the "everlasting" varieties that give a long cropping season.
