Title: Sweet Corn Help Please
Post by: Plot35 on April 14, 2008, 16:05:50
I had no susses last year so I want to get it right this year.

Tips on Sweet Corn please.

At the moment I have sweet corn seeds on a damp tissue in a container with see though lid on my kitchen side. They have been there for 4 days and nothing much has happened yet, in the way of they seeds are not sprouting!!!!.

Can some please advise of what should be going on and what I should be doing.

Should the seeds be in dark on the damp tissue?
Do you keep the tissue damp?
How long before they should be sprouting ready to grow on in pots in my greenhouse?

Many Many Thanks.

Have you been advised to germinate them this way?

Can't say I have heard of this method but thats not to say it won't work.

This is how I grow mine ; http://tinyurl.com/2l3hu7 click on the picture to see what I produce.

It took about 8 days for my sweetcorn to sprout (indoors in 3 inch pots of seed compost)  I'd pot yours up soon as you see rootlets. And yes keep them damp and dark

I just throw my seeds into a tub of compost water and leave on a shelf in the greenhouse (unheated) under glass. I expect them to be up in the next 10 days.

I've found that they do actually need light to germinate.
I always dib the hole put in the seed then dont fill it back in just water gently.
I ususally get 100% ..
It was a tip from this website last year.
