Title: Carrots
Post by: hippychik on April 11, 2008, 14:03:28
I have never grown carrots before and was told that doing them in buckets/containers was a good idea.

What mixture of soil/compost/sand do I need? Plus any other hints.

I am growing them straight from seed

thanks

any compost that is friable and has good drainage will do, just remember to make sure the container fits the size of the carrot being sown

One way of growing perfect show quality carrots (or for eating) is to place several sections of drainpipe or similar in a container and infill with sand.

Fill the pipes with sifted soil/compost mixture and withdraw the pipes.
About 5 seeds are sown in each pipe and the best seedling kept.

The sand ensures good draing so the root has to go down to seek water.

It can be done in any sized container up to an oil drum or dustbin.

I was told by my mentor that it was a slow release fertilizer and as carrots can continue growing for a long time the feed is there for them.
As i have had good results i have changed nothing in the formular.
