Hi!
When can i start buying my tomato plants? (Sorry that is probably illegal with you experts but i am quite new to this diy veg!)
I have a non-heated lean to greenhouse and live in the Norfolk area......
any advice on what fruits well / tasty?
You still have plenty of time to grow your own seeds :D Why dont you give it a go, its my first time, and its great watching them grow.
Start them off indoors, till they germinate.
my first year with a plot I bought tomato plants, but there isnt anything better than growing your own springbokgirlie is right it is great watching them grow.
The Garden Centres are selling quite well developed plants now, Ours are just at first true leaf stage in the cold G'house. They obviously want to sell you them twice.... I'd hold back for a fortnight if I was buying them... We will be selling Heritage toms to the public in Mid-May and upto the first weekend in June at our open days...
;D
thanks for the advice - i think i will end up doing both - thanks to your comments. I will buy some seeds this weekend to plant - but also buy some plants in the next few weeks - i cant lose....can i !!!!
Deffinatley do it yourself I started mine in the kitchen and I have been pleasantly shocked as they all germinated! I have too many now! So I will give half away to someone witha bigger greenhouse than me! Mine is a zip up plastic! I am about to do some tumbling toms this week for my hanging baskets and a couple more money maker for out doors. Why don't you ask on the swap page if anyone has a couple of seeds they can spare instead of buying a full packet! OR! Like my father in law does when he eats a tom he likes the flavor of he just uses the seed from that! He never fails! Have fun it's easier than you think, I'm a newbie and my toms are better than any of my other stuff! I've got 7in tall cauli's, yep they bolted!

So do I, all three of the above and I put Gardeners Delight seed in two weeks ago and they're all up now. In fact I got far too many.
My greenhouse is unheated, it's a lean to (It's not very lean at the moment, it's bursting at the seams) and I'm right on the Norfolk border, everything I've planted in it has come up well so you'll be fine putting tomato seed in now.
Thanks Plot69 - another norfolk lean-too greenhouser!
Also thanks manicscousers - i will have to google where the nearest nettos is - that is a billy bargain.
Our lottie shop is selling tomato plants donated by members who have grown excess. They are selling for 50p each. Plant height range from 5 - 15"

Just curious what your night time temps are dropping to because I've been wondering how my tomato plants would do in our coldframe if the outside temp goes below freezing.

I have no idea. It sometime gets pretty cold at night but not enough to affect the plants inside the greenhouse. Up until a few weeks ago I was lighting a little paraffin heater at night but I don't anymore.
I have so little space in there at the moment I can't wait to start planting stuff out at the plot.
In my coldframe there are cabbage, cauli, sprouts, runner beans, tomatoes,
maigolds, chard. all seedlings and all fine at night , no bubble wrap and im in Yorkshire
