Title: how to create cheap border edging for paths?
Post by: suzynick on April 06, 2008, 22:39:02
We have loads of paths to create which are going to have pebbles on (from the allotment of course!) but we need to create an eding of some kind to keep the stones from falling back into the soil.  Any cheap cheap ideas?

thanks!

Use tannalised timber, about 4" x 3/4".  You can but the lengths in any DIY place for only a couple of quid for a 6' length.  Nail it to 2"x1" (tannalised) posts about a foot long, use galvanised nails that will go all the way through and can be bent over.  3" should do it.

It lasts for ages.  I edged all my lawns 10 years ago when we first moved in here and its still going strong.  Eventually the wood dulls down as well, so you hardly see it.

Welcome to the site Suzynic,

I think the tannalised timber is the way to go. Ok you have to pay for it but it does last for ages, you could use pallets, but its fiddly and its not treated wood so would need replacing much sooner.

If you use untreated timber you're letting yourself in for problems in a couple of years as it begins to rot. I remember years ago, those dreadful instant makeover garden programmes were encouraging people to use pallet wood for decking. I dread to think what it ended up like.

Hi everyone

Thanks for the nice greetings and the tips have passed on to o/h.  I'm not the green fingered one by the way he is! I get the boring jobs of weeding, stone picker and generally get in the way of o/h!!! Though i do make lots of yummy things out of our allotment produce!

Nice to meet you all
Suzanne
