Title: Potatoes in containers
Post by: star on April 04, 2008, 22:18:43
My hubby asked me a very sensible question earlier, that I couldnt answer! (no surprise there)

It was......if you have potatoes in bins like ours, and they dont all grow at the same rate. We have 5 to a bin and 2 in each bin are growing very fast. He asked what happened to the ones growing slowly? And why could I not put the potatoes in and put the compost in to the top of the bins at the outset, as surely they would reach the top anyway.

Seems a very reasonable question to me, does anyone know the answer? ;)

Filling them up in stages allows the plant to create some energy through photsynthesis and not all from the seed spud, so you get stronger plants, if you have ever seen pots come through in a compost bin the long white shhot is rather thin..
;D

Oh ok, so I guess I'll have about 4 good strong plants and the rest will look like white peas ::)

Thanks for the explanation Saddad :D
