Jeannine asked for a volunteer, so lets see if we can make this happen :)
As per the tomato swap, please read these (suggested) instructions before signing up. Feel free to comment and offer improvements as I've never done a swap like this before.
Seeds to be in packets of 10, clearly labelled with relevant information, ie:
name of bean
type (dwarf or climbing)
source (home saved or store bought)
date of birth
your A4A username (just so if I drop the lot I know who sent what)
Seeds must be sent to me in a bubble wrap envelope. Also enclose a label with your name and address on (just written on a piece of paper will be fine) AND loose stamps to at least the same amount you used to send your beans to me. I'll use these and recycle your envelope to return the new beans to you.
Send as many packets as you like, you'll get the same number back.
I also suggest:
- no spares, as this could tip the postage over what you sent
OR
- send an extra stamp or two incase needed and I'll return these if not used
(not sure which way is best yet)
- don't send the most common beans – my nightmare would be everyone sending in Scarlet runners!
- not too many multiples of any one variety
- must be recognised beans ie not "the one with no name that Uncle Henry's been growing for 45 years" UNLESS it is exceptional or unusual in some way and you have to tell us
- as per the tomato swap it will be completely pot luck ie not possible to do requests for specific beans
- do we want all types of beans? What about broad beans or soya beans?
- happy to include people overseas if we can find a way round the postage and the beans will get through customs okay each way (I know nothing about this)
Feel free to add any thoughts or comments.
And sign up on this thread if you're interested. Its not a firm commitment – just trying to guage numbers and get ideas to see if we can make this happen.
Over to you!
Lisa :)
can i play please
my vote would be against broad and soya beans (coz they are disgusting ) but i would go along with what everyone else wants
Glad I am not the only one who thinks that broadies are the Devil's own.
I have the Italian beans too so that might help, so yes ,if going ahead.
It is a brilliantly quick method of ptp.
ooh, yes please to a bean swap ;D
(thanks for offering to organise)
Count me in - I have lots of different beans so sure I can send some less common types.
I also have 'Yard Long' now there's a challenge!

i'd be happy to have broad beans/ soya beans etc
thank u
i want to join as well,if it is okee.
Can I play too please? ;D

barkingdog
Count us in too please ;D , oh and broadies are fine :P
Okay, I've think we've got about 10-11 people interested so far in just a few days, so its looking hopeful :)
I suggest we leave it a bit longer to see if anyone else is interested, as if there are more participants there should be more varieties to go around.
I have packed up some seed already. ;D
Me too! And a bean swap was a very good excuse to pop in the HDRA yesterday as I was passing to see what been seeds they had ::) ;D
Can I be added at the last minute please?
Mine are all packed and ready to go ;D ;D ;D
barkingdog
Off to do it now! the washing up can wait.
I would like to join in ....
Not sorted out my Bean 'spares' yet but will make an effort this coming week
What's wrong with Broad Beans ? wonderful flavour ;)
Hi, any room left for another bean fan?? sarah.
Ooo yes, lots of room left for anyone else who wants to join. As with Jeannine's tomato seed swap the more the merrier, as that should mean there are more varieties to go around.
Bump! Any more takers?
From the replies so far it seems like the concensus is no broad or soya beans, so lets go with that.
Gotta dash now, but I'll PM my details later to everyone who's replied so far so you can send your seeds to bean swap HQ and we can make this happen :)
Cheers CityChick.
excellent, and thank you for organising.
will bag up my beans tonight ;D
Great, can't wait. I hadn't packed any soya or broad beans. ;D

Anyone else still want to join in?
I guess we should have some sort of cut off date. What about everything in the post by Monday at the latest? That gives anyone else the weekend to get their bean seeds packed up ready to go and in the post on Monday?
If anyone else is joining in please let me know so I definitely include you. Otherwise I'll do the swaps when ruud's seeds arrive...
ruud's has arrived, gunnerbee's and littlebabybird's are on their way... :)
And I'm in beany heaven - looking at all the different varieties, shapes, colours and sizes so far.... ;D

CC I think you outdid yourself. I have lots of lovely new varieties to try and more than I expected to receive. Well done for a fantastic job. :) :) :)
Glad everyone sounds pleased with their packages :)
A big "thank you" also has to go to ruud, who sent over some very generous packets to share around which helped give extras to everyone. And we all have the fun of trying to identify "ruuds big mystery" when it grows! ;D

which one the mystery?
lbb
There should one small packet in each parcel labelled:
ruud's "BIG MYSTERY???" unknown!
ruud got these from someone in the States. The variety is unknown, hence calling it "ruud's Big Mystery"...
Perhaps we could compare notes late summer re;Ruud's mystery.
Good idea :)
:( oh, I dont have one of those, never mind, next year one of you can keep me some of yours
lbb
Oh no, I'm really sorry to hear that llb :( :( :(
I don't know what went wrong there then. Its definitely on the list I have as sending you (number 8?) And to double check I ticked each variety off as I popped them in the envelope. Well this is a mystery bean in more ways than one then!
We can't have you missing out on the fun - PM me your addie and I'll pop half of mine in the post to you :)
hi city chick
please if you save some seeds from the ones you grow i would love to try them next year,
if you dont save seed then i'm sure one of the others does :)
lbb
If CC sends two and I did likewise then we should all have enough to do the business.
pm if it's a go'er.
Beans arrived today, great variety,i have to google for some of the beans.I have some spare ones if littlebabybird p.m. her adress to me i can send them over. Thanks citychick for organising this wonderfull beanswap.
Wow! International airmail was quicker than some UK post then :D Thanks for letting me know they arrived safely.
Yes ,only 3 0r 4 working days from frontdoor to frontdoor.
Wow :o :o :o
Ours arrived today, so many varieties we've never tried - enough for the next three years 8) - good job we've set aside another bed for beans ;D
Well done and cheers for organising this Citychick :-*
soooo, when do we need to plant allof these?
lbb
Hi DadnLad,
I received some of your Tamilla beans from the swap but I can find nothing about them via Google. Can you tell me more about them?
Cheers!
barkingdog
I contacted the HSL for info about this one and they sent me the info below. (Note: HSL say this is a dwarf bean, but these seeds are definitely for a climbing bean. Maybe a previous grower has selected them just for the climbing variation?)
"Tamila"
Named after our donor's best friend this variety originates in the village of Kostilnyky, western Ukraine, an area where traditional crops continue to be grown on a large scale. The plants do show some variability, with some determined to climb, a normal characteristic of this type of local variety. Produces a heavy crop of pretty pink beans, best used for drying.
Lbb I will be sowing in pots in the gh now! Go go go.

Barkingdog - as Citychick says, Tamilla are a climber(well they did for us ;D) we didnt try the pods fresh, but allowed them to dry till first frost, and used them in stews etc, much like Borlotti beans
thanks for the replies re Tamilla beans - they sound good (and look nice too!)
bd
Just got back from my hols and scrabbled through the pile of ordinary mail looking for the beans - and what a selection. Thanks to all who played - this will be fun!
Cheers all.
