Title: Could my garlic be ready to pull?
Post by: Magnolia on April 03, 2008, 10:41:11
My 1st garlic harvest.  I planted the cloves late september in tubs and they've taken off far better that those in the ground.

The stems are thick and strong, the leaves are just starting to die/turn yellow.

Is this is it??  Are they ready??  ;D

Mine are looking exactly the same, but I read on another thread that this is perfectly normal, but they are not ready for harvesting yet.

:D

Harvest July - August.

There's a difference between yellowing of the tips - like now - & dying/drying later when the whole leaf goes. The Garlic Farm advise lift when 1/3 of the leaves turn & the plant looks 'weak at the knees'.

I think!!

Lift them when about 10% have fallen over; this won't happen until June or July, depending on the variety.

Why not lift one and see!  then then we will all know if it is better to grow in tubs.

A lot of gardening is about trial and error so forfeiting one bulb will remove the guessing.

I have never grown in tubs before, plus you don't mention if your tubs are indoors or out, so all of this might have an affect on the final outcome!

Look forward to what you have to tell us if you do follow my suggestion.
