We dismantled and brought home an 8 x 10 greenhouse at the weekend, and this is on one of the windows - any ideas what it's supposed to be, please ???

Bizzare!
It kind of looks like half a Terminator's arm?! - I'll be back....

Yes. It's an automatic vent opener but it doesn't look like its set correctly.
The long arm with all the holes in is the adjuster. Most of the ram, the shiny bar connected to it, should be inside its housing cylinder when the window is closed and its cold.
When the cylinder heats up, the (usually wax) filling heats up and expands pushing the ram out and forces the window open. As it cools down the cylinder cools the filling contracts and the weight of the window forces the ram back into the cylinder and it closes.
There is actually very little that can go wrong with them as long as they're not rusty and from the picture I suspect your's will work fine once adjusted correctly.
Wonderful, many thanks Vortex, I'll have a go at adjusting it before we erect it.
its like one of these from argos

If the automatic vent opener does not work on your greenhouse, I would recommend investing in one. It saves you opening and closing the door and windows yourself, and also could save some plants & seedlings from dehydrating too quickly.
Hi all :)
There is a new thread about this in the Under glass section.
Thanks for the pictures. I did fit mine correctly. It worked today
too when the temperature plummetted just before a rain shower.
