I'm growing pes for the first time and I've got some seedlings ready to plant out. I know they don't climb up canes like runner beans so I was thinking of building a kind of chicken wire 'wall' to plant them along, will they hang onto that ok?
Or does anyone else have better solutions?
Thanks :)
Cuke, we have a sort of cage made of chicken wire stretched on a wood frame and we grow brassicas in it. Last year I planted peas around the outside and the inside and it was great so yes, definitely ok.
I put canes in and around my peas and they cling to the canes for support.
I suppose it isnt actually climbing but its close.
that's what I do
Mine did, although I found the plastic chicken wire less painful at the cut ends.
fork- i've put in small bamboo typre canes in my bed, will the peas climb up these? is this what you did? we had a bit of a 'mare with the netting, go gave up!! we'll net the whole lot from pigeons once there in- will my peas be ok? x
Hi Rosie,
Imagine a pea trench dug about 8"(not good with metric).I put the canes in a criss cross fashion down both sides of the trench. So now it looks like its enclosed. The peas will grow and cling to the canes for support.
Hope you understand what i mean.Wish I had a photo to show you.
think i've got it!
thank you Fork :)
I find pea netting really hard to put up.I think the chicken wire is a good idea.
we also use chicken wire, canes at the end with it wrapped around, roll it up at the end of the season ;D
I used the plastic mesh stuff last year as we had too many... it was great but not tall enough we will need two layers and then I'd worry about stability..
