just put her in a warm bath and nothing there in the bottom region had a gentle poke about and dosnt seem anything blocked, however when picking her up noticed that her stomach is very swollen and feels full, she is still eating and drinking! she is standing just like a penguin stands! so still no further forward!
Is it a crop that feels full or the area=stomach between crop and legs?
Does you girl have access to the grit?
Anyway...if she is eating and drinking and she doesn't feel egg bound there is not much you can do at the moment...just keep eye on her.
Have you given her much bread...as if she has been greedy...walking would be a task with swelling bread.
Have you fed her with something different from the usual?
That remains me my old girls...first time they had some crushed snails...they ate so much, that when I went to see them if they have even touched them, I thought my girls were sick or even dead!..they were literally lying on they backs legs up in the air..and they were stuffed..Only quiet little moaning noises revealed that they were still breathing.. ;D
If she otherwise seem to be out and about, not going to quiet corners or wanting to sleep or just be still more than usual...I would not worry too much...sometimes these things happen...we all have our "slim" and "fat" days ::)
sorry goodlife the picture you paint of your chickens having stuffed their faces and lying on their backs moaning made me chuckle. gunnerbee hope your little girl is ok
QuoteHave you given her much bread...
yes i put in six stale wholemeal baps this morning! and some other stuff, but she kept eating and eating! ill see what tomorrow brings, fingers crossed she will be o.k.
Ahh...! Lets hope that was the reason....I always wet the bread to avoid this situation...not soggy but just moist. And 1-2 slices is plenty for, say 6 chikens at the time. Bread, pasta, potatoes, rice etc. =left overs, should be given as treat as they do not have much nutritional value as a food...but BOY!...do they love it..
A bit of spagetti and they think that they have hit worm jackpot.. :)

Left overs are a great source of food for fowl, Used correctly .
One of the reasons I keep hens is so no food that is left from the table gets wasted.
Here they are put in a bucket then very evening mixed with layers meal to a crumbly damp consistency this is the chickens evening meal for them to go to roost on .This is called mash ..
Only things I don't put in the bucket are meat or fish..
Other than this the birds are fed scattered wheat and layers pellets every morning this makes em scrat about for it . Brassicas are hung for them to peck at..
Sorry if this seems blunt but, Fat lethargic birds ain't healthy birds nor are they good laying birds.. cheers. Jim

Yes..you are absolutely right. But I was refering by using eg. bread on it's own..only as a treat.
Mixing with other feed they get all the necessary nutrients required. Pasta, bread etc. on it's on do not have much goodness in them. And as chickens are very keen to eat these "empty" ingredients they have tendency to bulk they bellies up with them and not getting much good stuff in.
My little bleeders are like this ..they peg all the yummy stuff first and given opportunity leave rest uneaten.
So as for my present girls..only as treats..
My previous lot were totally different personalities...they ate anything and everything...mash were fine with them..
My 4 girls get hot water soaked bread most afternoons, with any leftover fruit and veg - they go mad for it, but now make sure that they also have a handful of grit thrown in now, as they seemed to get full crops after eating too much
Goodlife: hope your girl is better soon
Kathi
Thanks Kathi...but it is gunnerbee's girl...not mine :)
But I join your wishes...
OOps - I do a good impression of a doughnut sometimes!!! :o

Oh Gunnerbee, I hope she's OK - got my fingers crossed :-*
