This is the bane of my life at the moment.
Anyone who has an infestation knows what I mean, It can really spread across the surface. and you need to dig 3ft deep to eradicate the subterranean root.

Thanks !, Regards Riffster
Looks like what I'd call wild strawberry. Not that that's much of an answer, sure someone more clued up will be along in a minute
I thought the same but have not convinced myself. :-\
It does run prolifically across the surface ( like strawbs) , but it can start from a horizontal root 3 ft down in the clay. It appears that everytime I leave a centimetre of big black dark dead looking root, it will grow to the surface again - sigh...
Maybe I exaggerate, but it seems like 3 ft down - and it is in clay !
id be interested in that answer cos i have loads of it too
looks like creeping cinquefoil to me, or potentilla reptans to give it it's proper title. It has a yellow flower (eventually).
cinquefoil
For the second time of posting - my last effort went off into the ether.
What you've got is ground elder.

Guys, I'm now sure what I have is "creeping cinquefoil" - thanks you guys.
Now I can give it more names rather than " That ******** weed that I hate the most"
Thanks - Regards
Riffster
- Now, dig dig dig. burn burn burn
Cinque foil leaves have serrated edges - ground elders are smoother.
Thanks - will update my internal weed database :)
I don't think it is ground elder:

I have loads of that >:(
Dig the roots up and sell them to the wickki wacky people. More profitable than tomatoes. ;D
I too have this is my garden and it's a real nuisance >:(
It is called Mock Strawberry. Full details can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mock_Strawberry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mock_Strawberry)
I hope that helps!
barkingdog
Certainly looks like the stuff I spend hours tearing up and trying to dig out, barkingdog.
Speads in the same way strawberries do but much, much faster with tendrils spreading in all directions. It's a pain to get rid of.
it does look like young ground elder, mine is emerging right now!
im squinting like mad at the screen trying to see! can we have a close up!!
I will try to get some more close ups tomorrow - weather permitting.
I'm convinced that what I has is creeping cinquefoil
Certainly looks like creeping cinquefoil. People used it for love potions :D

Well it would be nice to get my own back now and again. Especially in answer to "well Mrs, it's not very often your right, but you're wrong again" ??? ???

A left click on a pic will enlarge. Another left click will reduce it.
