Can remember my grandpa having an allotment in the '50s. Neither of my parents did the "growing thing", but obviously something had an effect on me as a tiny person for me to have one of my own. Now son's partner has put her name down for a plot and my son wants to help. How far do some of your folks go back with their allotments, bearing in mind they've be around for 200 years or so?
My grandad had one, when I was a kid my dad grew veg in our huge back garden so with me its at least three generations.
My mum and dads idea of gardening was cutting the privet on a sunday afternoon which I hated.I remember when we moved into our house in the sixties.The grass was knee high and mum cut the lot with a kitchen knife as we could not afford any tools.We had never heard of allotments ;D Happy days.
My great grandma didn't have an allotment but had a massive garden that grew tonnes of veg and fruit, my grandad (her son) had a piece of land that was probably the size of at least 3/4 full plots and used that for fruit and veg I can remember when I was young wandering around a massive fruit cage.
Then when my dad came out of the army and bought their first home it had a garden that is about 100ft and so my mum grew lots of veg so much so that my dad was put off green beans for life LOL
When me and my brother left home my mum turned half of it into an area for the dog and the other half into a fruit cage with a small section for veg.
And now here I am growing my own veg in my garden and have just taken on an allotment. I hope my kids pick up the bug for when they are older.
My Grandad and two uncles had plots (in fact, one uncle still does) - it deffintley had an impact upon me getting one I'd say.
I can still remember eating goosegogs straight from a bush in my uncle's lottie when I was about 10!
My little lad (15 months) has just got his first pair of wellies, so hopefully I'll be passing on the tradition!
