Title: Kumquat
Post by: Tin Shed on March 15, 2008, 21:35:13
I thought that kumquate were edible, but the one I bought from Aldi for my mother says on the label that it is for ornamental purposes only.
Has anyone grown them and eaten them and lived to tell the tale?

we grew up on these in SA.

Pop the whole fruit in your mouth.  The skin is sweet, but the insides are sour.

They are lovely :)

You can buy them to eat in supermarkets now from what I have seen.

;D ;D

Hi
I think you will find that we do not get hot enough summers for the fruit to form. I have had a specimen in my garden for over 10 years now and have never had fruit.

Like so many other out of season fruits, Kumquats in the s/market are, more often than not, a total let-down.

The plant I bought is covered in fruit - it seems a shame not to use them, but the label says that it is an ornamental plant oly.

I think what the label means is "don't expect an annual fruit crop in this climate, but it will still make a very pretty plant".

I've got a kumquat and a locquat outdoors which are both fruiting, though I must stress I bought them with fruit developing (no miracle worker me!)
I've had quite a few off them already - I think that helps them produce more. They've got a fair bit of new growth on them too. I have to keep reminding myself that the skins are edible, it seems quite alien to NOT have to peel citrus type fruit!
