Title: Runner beans
Post by: Mrs Ava on July 16, 2004, 13:11:22
Going to be able to pick my first batch of runners next week.  Am impressed with how well they have grown.  I need to pick the tops out now as they have reached the top of their poles, but first I need to ask someone for a step ladder!  Being 5 foot 3 isn't conducive to pinching the top growth out of runners that have legged it up 7 foot canes!

lucky you! My runner beans look like they are dwarfs. I started with six, lost two to slugs (on the same pole, grr) and now have four that are about 3ft high. They look gorgeous - covered in red flowers, but far too short!

Not sure what you mean but - beans climb anti-clockwise upwards. Except when, like normal, they don't!! = Tim

My seeds didn't get into the ground until May 1st - apparently Essex tradition  :-\, but they have romped!  Between my runners and frenchies I have flowers that are red, pink, apricot, purple, lilac and white!  Fabulous!

My runners are approx 5 foot high (those that that climbed!!). The rest made a break for it sideways (even though I planted them all at the base of poles)

One or two red flowers at present but up here in Leicestershire we've had really soggy weather for the last two weeks.
