Title: how long are tom seeds viable for?
Post by: laura G on March 13, 2008, 22:18:19
I have found some tomato seeds that i bought from Lanzarote, not sure when (less than ten years but possibly more than five) The foil packet has been opened but i don't believe i have grown any (definitely not got any tomato's from them). Do you think they might grow? I have sown some but they have not come up yet, but then none of the others i sowed at the same time have either.
The name on the packet says "Tomaten Golden Konigin"??
also says " Tomaten amarillos koengin"

I grew some last year from 1995 seeds, they germination was about 40 %. I think it largely depends on how you store them though

Try chitting them and see whether they grow. If they do, plant them.

I've grown those seeds from my holidays and grew them ok but I couldn't get them to ripen. Also the ones that did were not very remarkable.
Also I've noticed over the years when I use seeds i've kept that the yields tend to drop off.
Just my experiences however.

tomato seeds germinate very quickly so you've nothing to lose. It's only with seed that naturally takes a long time to germinate that you run into problems. No germination and a month wasted
