Title: Need some honesty
Post by: Magnolia on March 13, 2008, 21:30:08
I've probably made the classic newbie mistake, over eager and sown loads to early.  Could you be honest with me and tell me whats too early and should be scrapped?  I'm in West Yorks

This is what I've sown;
Sunflowers x40 inside porch and on window ledges - about 4inches tall
Lettuce in porch looking good (3inches)
Raddish in porch (1inch)
Spuds 1st and 2nd earlys - all under cover just starting to break thin layer of soil
Broad beans - only just coming through
Parsnips in toilet roll inside sprouted
Parsnips in containers in coldframe with fleece
Carrots in toilet roll inside sprouted
Carrots in containers in coldframe
Beetroot in plastic greenhouse (2inch)
Leeks on windowsill about 5inches tall
Chard - just sprouted
Chillis inside
Tomatoes on windowsills from 1 - 4inches

Thanks for reading.

Nothing should be scrapped.  We gardeners learn by our mistakes!! (and how)!!

Keep everything growing, so that you can learn for next year 'where you went wrong'.

From your description, your tomato plants definitely need potting up.

If you can keep them inside for about a month then the Toms/Chillis and Sunflowers should be OK.. the rest can go out when you want. The Potato foliage should be earthed up and reburied at this time of the year, even if under cover... it gives more stem for the tubers to develop on...

I'm not an expert on tomatoes but I think you should plant them deep when repotting, as in quite far up the stem so they're not all tall and droopy.

Is this not true all you tomato experts?

You haven't said if you're running out of space.
If that is the problem I'd get rid of the sunflowers and radishes.
They both grow quickly (here at least), the seed is cheap and I'm thinking the sunflowers would grow a stronger stem outside which they need to support the heavy head- that is if you're growing the tall type sunflower.

Thanks for all your replies.  All really helpful.  I'm ok for space now.  Mind you it may be a different story when the sunflowers need potting on (again).  Certainly won't be starting them off in February next year!!!

I'm going to hangfire and not sow anything more for a few weeks until the weather warms up.
