Title: Freesia help
Post by: glow777 on March 11, 2008, 19:47:13
I have 50 or so freesia corns but no idea of their requirements. I would (if possible) like to plant some outside for cutting and grow some in pots to take to the house if/when in flower.

Can anyone help with -

planting times
spacing and depth
frost proofing
everytjhing else ! etc

I only have cold greenhouses available and fleece

I have planted mine out in the garden and in pots on my patio 10 cm apart and they are all popping their heads up already :)

Get them in as soon as possible.  I plant mine about 6cm deep and have 10 corms per 30cm diameter pot.  There's no need to worry about frost now but remember Freesias are not hardy in the UK and are therefore treated like annuals.

Hi again Glow.  I'm sorry but I can't explain it.  It may be because SPG and I are both much further south than you.  All I know is that it's fine to plant the corms here in March but they simply don't over-winter.  Perhaps a more more experienced gardener will come along shortly with a proper explanation?

Glow, here's a link to a previous thread with some advice on growing freesias:

Didn't one of the posts mention that they need a cold spell in order to get going? If you plant them now, they should be okay in any frosts that come along. If you're concerned, plant them a little bit deeper.

Ooh, thank you so much for this post, freesias are my personal favourite flower and I have never been able to  grow them, I will try again now if it isn't too late.
